According to the bookmakers, three-time defending champions VakıfBank İstanbul are the main favorites to win a back-to-back gold medal, while their rivals from Turkey Fenerbahçe SK İstanbul are just behind. The Russian duo Dinamo Kazan and Dinamo Moscow, respectively, are the next in line to claim the title, according to the bookmakers.
Sadly for the volleyball fans around Europe, officially the best player at the Old Continent at the moment, Tijana Bošković from Serbia, will not play the Champions League this season since her club Eczacıbaşı VitrA İstanbul failed to secure a berth to the tournament throughout the domestic league. They finished fourth in the 2016/17 Turkish Vestel Venus Sultanlar Ligi.
This season’s Champions League will have three debutants: Developres SkyRes Rzeszów and Grot Budowlanych Łódź (Poland) and Maritza Plovdiv (Bulgaria).
AGEL Prostějov from the Czech Republic and Fenerbahçe SK İstanbul from Turkey will play at the opener of the 2017/18 Group Stage on December 12 at 17:30 CET, followed by Vizura Ruma (Serbia) vs. Chemik Police (Poland) encounter, which is on the same day but at 18:00 CET.
