He's picked up an Olympic gold in Athens 2004 and two more silver in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 amongst dozens in other competitions, but for Brazil legend Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho - better known as Giba - it's not just about the medals.

Brazilian volleyball superstar

Volleyball has given me a lot and medals are great, but it’s not my life,” said the 39-year-old superstar in an inspirational speech to the National Federations of the world at the FIVB Congress Workshop on Tuesday.

But it’s not just the medals. Show the people what volleyball is, what joy it brings. Seeing kids smile is amazing.

When I was younger we started with the very basics: transportation and a sandwich. But this inspired us to arrive at the top,” said Giba, looks to take a more active role in the FIVB’s decision making process in his new position as president of the newly formed FIVB Athletes’ Commission.

“Family is everything. Never give up!”
