President of Costa Rica, Mrs. Laura Chinchilla Miranda enjoyed Costa Rica’s seventh title in the history of the Central American Games. For Guatemala this is their third silver.
“Our team works better under pressure, that’s why we start every match more relaxed than we should. Guatemala played very good and I hope that volleyball will improve in the Central American region,” said Angela Willis captain of Costa Rica.
Diana Arias, captain of Guatemala stated: “This is the result of our lack of competition; we need to play more and practice harder. Guatemala had an excellent tournament and we’re satisfied with the silver medal.”
Costa Rica 3, Guatemala 1
Costa Rica defeated Guatemala in four sets (28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-8) to collect the women’s gold medal. Verania Willis and Karen Cope scored 20 and 18 points for the winners while Dionicia Thompson added 10, including four aces. Diana Arias and Rut Gomez had 16 and 14 for the losers. The Costa Ricans controlled the defense at the net with a 15-5 difference in the blocking department. Both teams scored with six aces.
Nicaragua 3, El Salvador 0
Nicaragua defeated El Salvador in straight sets (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) to capture the women’s bronze medal. Heidy Traña was the best scorer for the winning side with 15 points followed by Amalia Hernandez and Josafat Diaz each with 8 points. Denisse Roger had 9 for the losers.
Nicaragua’s Claudia Noguera expressed her happiness. “I’m very proud of my team, Nicaragua has always been in the Central American podium and it’s a reward of such hard work”.
