The Serbian women’s volleyball team, known for its impressive nine-medal streak since 2015, faced a crushing setback in Paris. The squad, led by the renowned Giovanni Guidetti, was anticipated to secure the gold medal that eluded them. However, their Olympic journey ended in disappointment after an unexpected quarterfinal loss.
In an interview with Serbian Meridian Sport, the now-former coach Guidetti reflected on the team’s performance. He admitted that the tournament was more challenging than anticipated, noting that close losses to China and the USA ultimately shaped their path to the quarterfinals against Italy.
Guidetti acknowledged that had Serbia won one of those earlier matches, they might have avoided the tougher quarterfinal clash. He also regretted not including the full squad in more Nations League matches, a move he believes could have better prepared them for the Games.
The team’s early exit left them grappling with a sense of failure, despite their rigorous preparation and training. Guidetti expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that the team’s potential remained unfulfilled.
Following the Games, Guidetti confirmed his departure, stating his contract had ended and that he had not been contacted about a renewal.
