Yuri Marichev, head coach of Russia, stood in defense of his best player Ekaterina Gamova and stated that he would again call her in the National Team.

“I don’t regret calling Gamova! Not for a second! She could have been the key factor for winning this tournament. But, the whole team just did not have enough time to prepare. We trained only for 20 days, we needed much more time” said Marichev for Sport Express.

Gamova was a mistake, she was very ineffective. All we know very well that she is completely damaging the defense in the backcourt. At the net, she was not performing as usual, due to lack of enough practicing with the team. We saw that Malykh was doing real good at grand prix. Without opposite, Russia should rely on Kosheleva, who had to receive as well. Russia traditinally is not using middle attacks, therefore, when the rival team targets services to Kosheleva, only option remains Goncharova, who is not efficient from backcourt attacks. Marichev was stubborn as well, when he saw that Gamova was struggling, he did not try Malykh very much.

I dont understand much about positions. Can you explain please? For example, who was the main hitter? Gamova ou Kosheleva? and the main hitter dont have to receive the serve ball? Because Zhu was China`s best hitter but everybody was serving the ball on her

Usually, opposite hitters are the main attacking power of teams. Therefore, teams protect their opposites (Gamova, Sheila, Murphy, Centoni) from receiving. Usually, libero + 2 wing spikers receive the services. Again usually, one wing spiker (Pasynkova, Larsson, Fe Garay) is effective at backcourt to help libero in defense, the other wing spiker (Kosheleva, Hill, Neriman) is effective at the net to help opposite in attacks. Middle blockers are effective at the net, and almost useless in the backcourt, replaced by libero. You know that backcourt players should attack behind 3 metters line. When servicing, teams usually target the front position wing spiker to disturb his/her balance, so setter has four options: 1. Opposite 2. Frontcourt wing spiker (if she receive excellent and keep her balance) 3. Middle blocker (if the service is received excellently) 4. Backcout wing spiker. Think about Russia and Kosheleva is receiving from front positions. If she loses attacking balance, russia does not use middle blockers so often, setter either uses Goncharova, who should attack from backcourt or Gamova. Goncharova backcourt attack and Gamova attack are very ineffective. Therefore, Kosheleva should receive very well all the time to compete with the high level teams. So Kosheleva burned out. She is veeery good player but that responsibility is too much. Other teams, Brazil has perfect middle blockers, and setter uses them in attacks, so Brazil wing spikers are not necesseraly needed to be very good attackers. Thaisa, Fabiana and Sheila (opposite) clear attacking most of the time. USA, opposite Murphy is not very efficient too but again middle blockers (Akinradewo and Harmotto) help Kimbirly Hill at attacking. Chinese opposite is not so effective like Gamova, that is why they lost, USA targetted Zhu and Zhu (main attacking power) was forced to be out of balance.

Thank you very much, great explanation, finally now I get it. Gamova could not even get free balls when she was on the back, but I think her and Kosheleva are still the 2 best hitters. I don`t know if it is just me, but I think there`s not much attacks from the back court anymore. I think Sorsirma and Neriman are the ones that still does from the back a lot. Not even Sheilla, and she used to be unstoppable from the back. But Taissa sometimes will attack from the back, I don`t recall seeing any other middle blocker doing that. I Think Ruoqi Hui is really good but she did not play well at the final, she made stupid mistakes. And Zhu was exhausted, that is no excuse, but let`s say if she had a few more hours to rest, China would won. Or even if the libero had not been so careless in the 4th set China would have won the 5th set.

Not only from the backcout, Gamova was ineffective from the frontline as well. Rivals easily guessed where the russian attacks came from and the blocks were settled easily. In terms of, best hitters, think about how she handles the double or triple blocks. From my perspective, Kosheleva is the best one. She is almost unstopable, when she is balanced, no matter against double or triple blocks. Sheila and Centoni are very clever girls too, not so powerfull but their technics and visions of space are impressive. Others I like are Malykh and Zhu Ting, who are young and prospective super stars. USA does not have very talented individuals, may be a bit Kimbirly Hill. USA has great organisation, setter Glass used his hitters very balanced, Muprhy, Larsson, Akinradewo or Harmotto usually atacked against single blocks or unsettled double blocks, thanks to great receiving from Banwarth, Larsson and Kimbirly. Regarding us, Turkey, we could not bring our opposite Neslihan (injured) to the tournament, that is why we had to attack with two wing spikers, Neriman or Gozde no matter they are at front or backcourt.
