Russian Volleyball Federation held a meeting with the coaches from the Superleague to summarize the previous year of the National Team.

All the best coaches from Russia attended the meeting, including Vladimir Alekno, Andrey Voronkov (the current head coach of the Russian National Team), Gennadiy Shiipulin… And, it was head coach of Belogorie Belgorod who gave an interesting statement afterward:

We all agreed that we will meet again next year to talk about potential candidates for the National Team. FIVB rules are saying that every National Team can have two naturalized players in the roster. We have Dmitriy Muserskiy, so unfortunately Nikolay Pavlov and Alexander Butko can’t play together. With all due respect to Pavlov, we have to determine our priorities and at the moment our team needs Butko more” said Shiipulin.

We will see if head coach Andrey Voronkov thinks the same.

Dmitriy Muserskiy and Nikolay Pavlov were born in Ukraine, while Alexander Butko was born in Belarus.

I agree that they probably need Butko now at the moment. Grankin will play better when under pressure from another setter and if he doesn’t another setter comes in. It will be good competition.

Pavlov is great, but Russian team can probably find someone else in his position.

They also need to change the liberos that they had in the team this year.

there is a mistake in the quote.
A National team can only have ONE naturalized player. In case with team Russia it can be either taken by Nikolay Pavlov or Alexander Butko. As for Musersky, Shipulin hasn’t mentioned him in the original interview. (see volleyball.sport-express.ru/reviews/50800/).
Only nationality has a little to do with it, otherwise Musersky, Butko and Khtey could not have played in the team at the same time (but they did in 2011-2012). Khtey is a ukranian-born, too.

Volkov is injured, and out for the season. Mikhaylov is playing and starting to find his form after being injured near the end of last season.
