Gamova surprised, not only Russian fans, when she decided to say goodbye to professional volleyball. Legendary opposite of ‘Zbornaya’ and Dinamo Kazan felt the need to explain the reasons for retiring with an emotional post on Facebook.

“To all my friends! Nothing can be forever. I have lived my whole life for my sport and it is with much sadness I say these words, but the time has come for me to leave the court. I am so grateful that fate gifted me this opportunity to serve my beloved country at the top of the sport of volleyball for so many years, but it is now time for a new generation to takeover. Last year was very difficult, requiring me to endure two rehabilitations and play with the use of strong pain killers and despite the best efforts of my doctors it will not be possible for me to continue to play,” Gamova wrote.

“I want to thank all those who have supported me in my career and made all this possible. I want to thank my fans and friends for all your warmth and support. I want to thank my country for the opportunity to serve it and bring it victories. I am now leaving the arena, but not my sport and my country, both of which I will continue to serve to the best of my ability. Yours Ekaterina Gamova,” she added.
