Romanian Supercup was played as a double event in Blaj at the new “Alba Blaj” Polyvalent Hall. The event was celebrated grandly with a red carpet and light shows, truly a feast of Romanian volleyball.
The venue, with a capacity of 2,000, was packed with eager fans. “This is now our home turf. Our top team won’t have to compete anywhere else. From here on out, we play on our grounds, with all of you cheering us on,” declared Blaj Mayor Gheorghe Rotar. As officials looked on, the triumphant teams were honored: CSM Arcada Galați took the title for the men, and CSM Volei Alba Blaj claimed victory for the women.
Galați’s Super3 Triumph!
Romanian champions, CSM Arcada Galați, defeated SCM Craiova, the Romanian Cup holders, with a 3-0 set win (25-19, 25-23, 25-17). The team, led by coach Sergiu Stancu, clinched the trophy for the third time, following victories in 2019 and 2020. Galați now boasts 5 national championship titles, two Romanian Cups, and three Super Cups. Despite the dominant performance, Stancu anticipates a challenging season ahead, asserting, “There will be 5-6 teams competing for the title. Our objectives remain the same: the championship and the Romanian Cup.”
A Sweet Home Victory
CSM Volei Alba Blaj, the reigning Romanian champions, clinched the Romanian Super Cup for the second time in their history. In a thrilling match, they overcame Romanian Cup holders, CSM Lugoj, in a 3-1 set victory (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22). The outstanding game was overshadowed by a severe injury to Lugoj’s player, Georgiana Popa, during the fourth set’s beginning, likely sidelining her for at least six months. Volei Alba Blaj’s trophy cabinet now houses 13 trophies: 7 national championships, 4 Romanian Cups, and now two Super Cups. “This trophy boosts our confidence. We aim to progress from match to match,” said Nneka Onjejekwe, the MVP of the Super Cup match.
