Dominican Republic Secures Second Consecutive Pan Am Gold in Volleyball; Mexico Bags Bronze

Dominican Republic dominated the Women’s Volleyball tournament at the 19th Pan American Games, clinching their second consecutive gold by defeating Brazil 3-0. The final held at Arena Parque O’Higgins saw intense action with scores 26-24, 25-16, and 25-19.

Dominican Republic showcased their prowess throughout the tournament, remaining unbeaten with a 5-0 record. The team was led by the phenomenal Martinez sisters, Brayelin and Jineiry, along with Candida Arias, who turned the tide in the first set. Yonkaira Peña emerged as a force, leading the Dominican offense with 13 points in the final.

Brazil, with their 4-1 win-loss record, couldn’t get past the Dominican defense, despite spirited efforts from Sabrina Machado, who topped the match scores with 14 points.

After a 48-year hiatus, Mexico triumphed with a bronze medal, besting Argentina in a nail-biting five-setter, 3-2. Mexico showcased resilience, with Grecia Castro leading in scores, registering 26 points.

In individual accolades, Niverka Marte, the Dominican team captain, was crowned MVP of the tournament. Other Dominican stars, Brayelin Martinez and Yonkaira Peña, were recognized as Best and second-Best Spiker, respectively, with Peña also bagging the Best Server award. Notable mentions from Brazil include Lorena Viezel and Sabrina Machado, while Ivone Martínez of Mexico clinched the Best Setter title.

The tournament also saw individual brilliance from players across teams, with Neira Ortiz of Puerto Rico and Colombia’s Camila Gomez winning Best Blocker and Best Libero awards, respectively. Chile’s talent was recognized with Carla Ruz and Beatriz Novoa being honored as Best Digger and Best Scorer.
