In a thrilling semifinal, the Dominican Republic defeated Chile 3-0 (30-28, 25-21, 29-27) to advance to their seventh consecutive gold medal match in the Women’s U23 Pan American Cup, held at the International Velodrome of Xalapa, Veracruz. The reigning champions, who have won every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2012, will now face Cuba in a highly anticipated final.
The Dominican Republic’s victory was highlighted by an incredible eight-point comeback in the third set, overcoming a 15-23 deficit to seal the match in straight sets. Leading the charge was opposite hitter Alondra Tapia, who contributed 25 points, with middle blocker Florangel Terrero adding 14 crucial points. Despite Chile’s valiant effort, led by opposite hitter Petra Schwartzman with 19 points, the Dominican team’s superior attack (46-42) and blocking (7-6) allowed them to prevail.
In the other semifinal, Cuba pulled off a stunning upset against Mexico, winning a nail-biting five-setter (25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 14-16). Mexico took the first set convincingly, but Cuba fought back to claim the next two sets and gain the upper hand. Mexico rallied in the fourth set to force a decider, but Cuba held their nerve to secure a 16-14 victory in the fifth and final set, setting up a showdown with the Dominican Republic for the gold medal.
As the stage is set for the grand final, all eyes are on the Dominican Republic’s quest for a seventh title, while Cuba hopes to continue their surprise run.
