Although he didn’t make it official yet, Serginho has decided to retire and will soon officially comment on the subject, Olimpíada Todo Dia reported! The 44-year-old libero played for Pacaembu/Ribeirão Preto in the last season of the Superliga Masculina, which ended up prematurely due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

A two-time Olympic and world champion Serginho is an icon in the position of a libero. He’s the only athlete in the history of volleyball who played four consecutive Olympic finals between 2004 and 2016. In addition to the Olympic and world titles, Serginho won the FIVB World League seven times, a competition in which he was elected the MVP in 2009, FIVB World Cup two times, and Pan American Games once. He announced his retirement from the national team of Brazil after the 2012 London Games but later changed his mind. His return to the jersey of the “Seleção” was marked with the Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016.

Serginho played for seven clubs in his professional career, staying longest in Sesi-SP (2010-2017). With them, he won the Brazilian league and South American Club Championship, both in 2011. He competed for only one club abroad – Gas Sales Piacenza (2004-2008) with whom he won the CEV Cup in 2006.
