WorldofVolley spoke with one of the most prominent female volleyball players in South America at the moment, Yamila “Yas“ Nizetich, about how the ongoing coronavirus pandemic affects her and her colleagues.

Nizetich is the player without whom the Argentina National Team can’t be imagined, Thats why she put on Las Panetas jersey last year again after a one-year break and led it to win an Olympic visa. She has been playing in Italy, the country that suffers most in Europe from the coronavirus outbreak, for three straight seasons. The Italian league isn’t definitely canceled, but let’s face it, it probably will because COVID-19 pandemic is still raging in Italy.

How are you dealing with this coronavirus situation? How difficult is it for you to listen every day how many people died and how many got infected?

“It’s a really bad situation. I try not to watch or follow much about coronavirus because I get sad and nervous. This uncertainty makes me crazy.“

After China, the country where the virus first appeared, Italy suffered most. You were in Italy at the time when things started to get worse. Do you think that the league organization reacted fast enough to stop the competitions?

“I think everything happened too fast! We didn’t realize that moment and, in a while, we were closed at home in the quarantine. I think the league did everything to keep everyone safe and healthy. After that, like in Italy, the situation passed to all the countries.“

What was it like being in the epicenter of an epidemic in Europe?

“It was frustrating because it has never happened before, nobody knows how to react or what to do... Also, for me, being a foreign player far away from home was the most worrying... First, you’re afraid. After that, you understand that you must follow what doctors and people who really know about the situation say and you’ll be safe. So yeah... in the end, just doing what it needs to be done was the answer... and to be patient for sure!“

Are you still in Italy or you have returned to Argentina?

“I was able to go to France where my husband works to, at least, be together and overcome the quarantine as a family...“

So, how do you stay in shape in these days of quarantine? How do you train and keep mental strength?

“The most important thing is to understand the situation and adapt to what we have today. It’s not helping to be negative or to complain about that because you can’t do anything. Do what you can with what you have! So, fortunately, my husband is a fitness coach, a really good one (laughing), and we have almost the entire gym at home. So, we try to adapt the work to stay in shape. Also, I do stuff that I can’t do during the season like cardio by following some videos, or dance, or different stuff I can’t do when I’m competing. One more thing, I have a lot of time to study for the university. And, always, an Olympic dream is enough motivation to push me!“
