Return of Sérgio Santos ‘Serginho’ to the national team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is almost certain.

After announcing retirement at the 2012 London Olympics, a 40-year-old libero of Sesi-SP made his comeback to the Brazil’s National Team for the 2015 FIVB World League, on staff’s request.

As Brazilian media write, the main reason why Serginho wants to play at Rio Olympics is possibility to enter the exclusive group of the greatest medal winners in volleyball in history at the Olympics. In Brazil, only Dante, Giba and Rodrigão have the same number of medals like Serginho, but since they retired, the libero might became the Brazilian volleyball player with most medals – four.

If he reaches that goal, Serginho will level with four other athletes on the list of the greatest volleyball medal winners in the history of the Olympic Games: the Italian Papi, Russian Tetyukhin, the Cuban Fernández Valle and the Soviet Ryskal.

Serginho went on Olympic podium three times so far: 2004 Athens (gold), 2008 Beijing and 2012 London (silver).
