Emma Villas Siena earned the spot in the Italian top division SuperLega from the second attempt as they were stopped in the 2016/17 Serie A2 (Division 2) playoff finals to the rivals they eliminated today, Monini Spoleto.

Emma Villas, who started to compete in Serie B2 (Division 4) after being established in 2013, and moved up one rank per year (with the exception of last season), closed the 2017/18 Serie A2 playoff finals against Spoleto by a 3-0. Game 1 and Game 2 ended with the tie-break, while Emma Villas won a decisive Game 3 in four sets, partially 25-19, 12-25, 27-25, 25-20 in front of 3,500 spectators at their Palaestra gymnasium.

This season the team was coached by Bruno Bagnoli but was replaced by Argentinean Juan Manuel Cichello. Also, the arrival of the Dutch outside hitter Hidde Boswinkel from Serie A2 rivals Mosca Bruno Bolzano in the finish of the regular season turned to be a jackpot as he became the leader of the team along with his compatriot Kay van Dijk.
