Ticket sales, safety, runners, laundry, and service. The roles of the VELUX EuroVolley2013 volunteers are many and their effort is priceless, says the local Managing Director. While the crème de la crème of European Volleyball fights for glory on the court, hundreds of volunteers in Denmark and Poland help out behind the scenes making sure the Championship runs as smoothly as possible.
“Without the volunteers, there would not be a European Championship. I am impressed by the effort, the fantastic attitude, and the immense work they are doing. The volunteers are here for free. They have taken vacation from their jobs and are coming after school. They always give you a smile, which is appreciated by all fans and players. I cannot thank them enough,” say the local Managing Director, Mads Bang Aaen.
One of the volunteers is Ida Lærkedahl. In her daily life she works in the social psychiatry centre in Slagelse, Denmark, but she has taken vacation from her work to devote herself to the European Championship. Ida’s primarily task is to wash the players’ clothes after their training sessions and the matches, but she is actually doing a lot more: “I also do a lot of ad hoc assignments to help out. I sort the clothes, bring coffee and cookies to the press centre, and I also had a little job as hostess yesterday. It is so much fun and a fantastic way to experience such a huge Volleyball Championship” Ida says. “It is very nice meeting other volunteers and being together or helping out. It is very special being part of the European Championship and help out so that the best players of Europe and the many fans have a good time”.
