The Slovenian men’s volleyball league has begun, with the opening match on Friday between i-Vent Maribor and Panvita Pomgrad. Maribor claimed a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-22) in a tightly contested game.
Both teams displayed inconsistencies as they adjust to significant roster changes ahead of the new season. Maribor’s defense, especially their blocking, made the difference with an impressive 16 blocks. Panvita Pomgrad had several chances to regain the lead in the third set after Maribor evened the match at 1-1, but despite holding multiple set points, they were unable to capitalize. However, Maribor pulled through to win the final points and carried their momentum into the fourth set to secure the victory.
Key players for Maribor included Martin Valenčič, who scored 27 points, and Stefan Mirković with 13 points. Panvita Pomgrad’s top scorers were Tilen Pušnik with 22 points and Sani Adžović, a former Maribor player, who added 18 points.
This weekend’s action continues with three more matches, including a highly anticipated clash between reigning champions ACH Volley and Calcit Volley, a repeat of last season’s final. ACH Volley enters the season as the favorite to retain their title, having dominated Slovenian volleyball for years.
