Even though the door was still open, France’s head coach Fabrice Vial had already left Kortrijk one hour before the start of the last match on schedule for the group. “I do not believe in miracles” he said.
Actually Belgium started out a bit nervous and Slovenia was helped by their captain Marina Cvetanovic keeping the score close up to 12 all. Finally Laura Heyrman took her side by the hand and she helped Belgium move to the front, together with Freya Aelbrecht and setter Frauke Dirickx.
Tjasa Turnsek and Elena Kucej powered a good start for Slovenia also in set 2 (7:6) but it was Heyrman and Hélène Rousseaux who anchored Belgium to the provisional 2:0.
With Dirickx from the serving line, the spikes by Rousseaux and the blocks of Nina Coolman, Belgium cruised to the final 3:0 that was followed by loud celebrations together with officials of the Royal Belgian Volleyball Federation.
