Brazil overtook the archrival Argentina in a reunion after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won the 2021 South American Men’s Volleyball Championship.
Brazil took revenge on Argentina for losing the bronze medal match at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo. The ‘Seleção’ prevailed over the archrival with a 3-1 (25-17, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18) in the final of the 2021 South American Men’s Championship at home soil in Brasília to claim the continental title for the 33rd time, the 28th time in a row. Actually, Brazil won all gold medals since the tournament was established (in 1951), except for one (in 1964, when Argentina became the winner). Brazil finished the competition with four wins and one lost set.
The Brazilian opposite hitter Alan Souza dominated the decider, scoring 24 points while Bruno Lima and Nicolás Méndez were the top scorers for the Argentineans with 14 points apiece. The setter from the winners Bruno Rezende ‘Bruninho’ had a great performance throughout the tournament and was elected MVP, while his teammate, the libero Maique Nascimento, was elected the best player of the match against Argentina.
Both Brazil and Argentina booked tickets for the 2022 FIVB World Championship in Russia.
