USA: Doug Beal, legendary USA’s player, coach and executive, retires!

Douglas Beal, one of the most promiment individuals in history of volleyball in the United States, decided to say goodby to practicing any kind of activity in this sport at the age of 68.

Beal has been affiliated with the national volleyball governing body for 46 years as a national team player, coach, administrator and executive. He became the chief executive officer of USA Volleyball in 2005.

He competed for the national team from 1970-76 and became its head coach in 1977, leading USA to their first Olympic gold medal, in Los Angeles in 1984 when he stepped down from that position returning in 1993 to 2004.

Under Beal as CEO, the federation became the national governing body for sitting volleyball, a Paralympic event, and established a separate department for beach volleyball, while he made huge impact on establishing USA’s volleyball training center in Dayton (Ohio), now settled in San Diego (California).

His retirement will be officially effective as from January 2, 2017.
