Rest: You should avoid exercising and reduce your daily activity to give your injury time to heal. You may need to use crutches or a walking stick if you can’t put weight on your ankle or knee.
Ice: Applying an ice pack to the injured area for ten to thirty minutes after the accident can help. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a towel to avoid ice burn.
Compression: Use an elastic compression bandage to limit swelling and reduce recovery time.
Elevation: Keep the injured area above the level of the heart to reduce swelling. Depending on where your injury is, you may need to lie down to do so. This will also reduce recovery time.
Pain-killers and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can be taken alongside RICE therapy to help reduce pain and swelling. But remember that aspirin should not be given to anyone under the age of 16.
If symptoms become worse after 48 hours of RICE therapy and taking pain- killers then seek advice from your GP.
