The 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship commenced on August 29 in Quebec City, showcasing electrifying performances from USA, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. team kicked off the event with a straight-set victory over Costa Rica, setting the tone for a day of exceptional play. However, it was Team Canada that truly electrified the home crowd at PEPS’ Amphithéâtre Desjardins-Université Laval. Competing in Group A, Canada swept Mexico in a dominant 3-0 match (25-20, 25-18, 25-20). Captain Alexa Gray led the charge, amassing 15 points, followed by Emily Maglio and Kiera Van Ryk, who contributed 14 and 13 points respectively. The Canadians outmatched Mexico in attacks (43-32), blocks (9-6), and serve aces (5-3), while also capitalizing on 18 Mexican errors. Grecia Castro López was the top scorer for Mexico with 14 points.
Earlier, the Dominican Republic showcased their prowess against Caribbean rivals Cuba, also clinching a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-17, 25-16) at the same venue. The Dominican Republic’s consistent play was evident, led by outside hitter Brayelin Martinez who contributed a balanced 9 points, including 6 attacks, 2 blocks, and an ace. Dominicans outperformed Cuba in attacks (35-24), blocks (14-8), and serve points (6-1). Greisy Fine led the Cuban team with 10 points.
