The Coamo Marathoners are still looking for their first victory of the season in the Puerto Rican Men’s Volleyball Superior League but you can’t put the blame on Cuban-born Jorge Mencia.

The native of Sancti Spiritu who is playing as a native after three years residing in the island has been scoring like a machine gun in the five losses suffered by his team thus far. Twice in the year Mencia has surpassed the 40-point barrier with 47 in a 3-2 defeat to the Guaynabo Mets on October 18 and 45 in a 3-1 loss against Lares Patriots on October 29.

The 47-performance fell short of the league record established by American Evan Patak, who set the mark with 52 playing for San Juan in 2007. The 23-year-old Mencia is in his third season in the league after playing for two years with Naranjito Changos.

In five matches he has a league-leading total of 179 points for an average of 35.8 points per game. Guaynabo and the Carolina Giants are still undefeated with both teams totaling 14 points and win-loss record of 5-0.

San Sebastian Caribes are next with 3-2 (10 points) closely followed by Lares with 3-2 (9) while Arecibo Captains and Corozal both have a 2-2 mark and six and five points, respectively. Naranjito is seventh with 1-3 record and three points. Coamo and Mayaguez are at the bottom of the standings with one point each and 0-5 record.
