WoV BLOG: Is there a space for the new FIVB volleyball rules?

by WoV

The men’s and the women’s U23 World Championship in Egypt and Slovenia were unique in several aspects.

At these championships, the new scoring system and serve rule were tested. The set was played up to 15 points and to win the game you need to take four sets. The 4-0 or 4-1 results bring three points to the winner, while 4-2 or 4-3 the winner gets two points while the defeated team receives one.

According to the FIVB, this system can shorten the duration of the matches and make the games even more interesting. There are no technical time-outs but there are just two 30-second time-outs per team. There are only two minutes of a break between the sets.

These are some facts about the men’s U23 World Championship:

Number of matches: 38

4-set games: 14 (37%)

5-set games: 10 (26%)

6-set games: 7 (18%)

7-set games: 7 (18%)

Shortest set duration: 9 minutes (5 times)

Longest set duration: 34 minutes

Shortest match duration: 43 minutes

Longest match duration: 2 hours

Average set length: 15 minutes

Average match length: 1 hour and 17 minutes

Both of the tournaments will be analyzed and evaluated extensively by the FIVB. Then, they will decide what happens next.

This system can be revolutionary as the introduction of the rally-point system,” say some volleyball experts.

The main question: Is there a room for the new FIVB rules? Should these rules be used worldwide? We are expecting the answers from the volleyball experts.

New rules are a bad for volleyball.
First of all, the sets have less substance, taste and drama. It’s like fast food versus eating in a fine restaurant.
Second, since the sets end quickly, once a team falls 3-4 points behind, loses hopes for winning the set, and we have sets results like 15-5 in a game that ends 4-3..
We will see less come-backs, which means less excitement and drama..
Since the sets are short, the beginning of the sets become most important, when a team starts 0-3 even 0-2 immediately time-out is called…This effects the flow of the game..
In the long run, serving will be more important than ever, a more defensive style will become the rule, every coach will try to cut down the mistakes, which will result less risk taking, more defensive, boring style of play..
This means volleyball will become less interesting and surely the fanbase will decline..

But the end of each set is what makes the game exciting. So having 4 or 7 sets make is more exciting.

Re: @Tamer
But that is the point, to make game more exciting from the beginning. And gives possibility to defensove team to have more chance to win

Completely insane. TV wants to know in 99% of the occasions how long will be a volleyball match because they need to offer commercial time for sale. Imagine you sell 45min of commercial time and you have a possibility to produce only 30 minutes? What are you going to say to the company that payed? Sorry, the games were short and we didn’t have the possibility to respect our deal? That company will never ever come back and make another contract. And there is a possibility, even to make game around 2 hours, and also to make it different than before. But somebody must think….

Re: @Axe
In this case volleyball should adapt the same scoring system as Basketball. They play 4 quarters of 12 minutes, in the end whoever has more points wins. TV would know exactly how long the game will last.

Previous comments miss the most stupid aspect of them all! Volleyball does need a revolution concerning the rules, because it has become boring, especially the men’s games that have become a simple serving contest.

However, starting the reform with the scoring system is very stupid, because, after you change a number of playing rules (for example a bigger ball, as table tennis did years ago), you’ll see that the new scoring system does not fit the new ways of playing!

The idea of 4 sets out of 7 has proven stupid too.

FIVB needs to recruit intelligent people (analysts) if they don’t want volleyball to collapse!

Re: @Sorin Acela
So, instead of calling somebody stupid, do you, ‘smart’ person, have any suggestion about what to do instead of just criticizing what people have to say???

Re: @Axe Eliminate all the lines except the necessary ones of the game court, minimise the number of LED panels around the court and bring the people as close as possible to the playing area, just for the beginning…
