A notorious player’s ranking system in the Brazilian Women’s Volleyball Superliga will remain for the next season as well, the majority of the clubs competing in the topflight voted.

The decision to keep the ranking system in the Brazilian Women’s Superliga that was voted by the nine of top 10 clubs in the Superliga Cimed 2018-2019 regular season (only the titleholders Dentil/Praia Clube were against it) caused discontent of those who are affected the most with this – star players. Interestingly, besides Praia, the Athletes Commission also opposed the decision but apparently, it did not mean a thing to the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV).

Gabriela Guimarães „Gabi“, Sheilla Castro, Natálio Zilio, Fabiana Claudino, and Tandara Caixeta posted a protest statement on their Instagram profiles „Is this because we are women?“ accusing CBV of machism and inegalitarianism. Why? Because, in the men’s Superliga, the ranking was excluded before the start of an ongoing season.

Out of these five players, four are ranked with the maximum score of seven points (Gabi, Natálio, Fabiana and Tandara) along with Danielle Lins „Dani Lins“, Thaísa Menezes, Fernanda Garay „Fê Garay“, Tifanny Abreu, Macris Carneiro, and Josefa Fabíola.

According to the current system, Superliga clubs are allowed to have only two high-ranked players on the squad. The ranking of players was implemented in the season 1992/93 with the aim of generating a balance between the teams participating in the league. The system was slightly modified in the 2016/17 season but has never stopped to raise controversy.

This is not the only protest of volleyball players recently, as world stars rebelled against international calendar established by the FIVB.
