The club with a long tradition in Italian women’s club volleyball but with no trophies on its account, Il Bisonte Firenze, surprised many in the country by sending an offer to one of the best-ever coaches that worked in volleyball, Julio Velasco.
The legendary Argentine expert Velasco (1990 FIVB Men’s World Championship Best Coach, 2022 CEV Lifetime Achievement Award…) got a surprising offer to command the Italian women’s side Il Bisonte after the Florence-based club sacked Massimo Bellano. The 70-year-old Velasco is currently the technical director of the Italian youth men’s national teams. The news of his possible engagement by the trophyless Serie A club was reported by Gian Luca Pasini on his blog.
The head coach of the famous “Generazione di fenomeni (a generation of phenomena)“ of the Italy Men’s National Team, who became the world champion three times in the 1990s, worked in women’s volleyball for the first (and last time) between 1996 and 1997 when he commanded Italy Women. Velasco retired from coaching activities in 2019.
