A 51-year-old Paolo Tofoli, a former setter of the Italian Men’s Volleyball National Team, with whom he became a two-time world champion and a four-time European champion, got excluded from the Division 2 match. Namely, in the encounter of the Serie A2 fifth round between Aurispa Alessano, the club that he coaches, and Sigma Aversa, Tofoli persistently protested at the end of one rally, complaining that the first referee overlooked the illegal dig of the opposing player.
Interestingly, despite the fact that his team won this rally, Tofoli simply could not stop arguing with the umpire, who did not have a lot of patience for the legendary player – he showed him a red card, followed with a yellow card, and Tofoli had to leave the bench of his club who, at the moment of winning the rally, led 2-1 in sets and trailed 20-21. But, ultimately, they lost the game by a 3-2.
