“Continuous dialogue”
On the agenda of the meeting on June 26 were dialogue about the arrangements of the CEV Champions League competition, as well as, notably, the foundation of a clubs’ association that would be fully supported by the CEV.
The CEV affirmed its desire to establish consistent and regular communication with a number of clubs in order to understand their interests and needs, to help make the CEV Champions League a strong and marketable product.
Only the biggest clubs were able to attend at Champions League level and the Italian Women’s teams did not to take part in the discussion.
It is unknown at this time as to the conditions under which the CEV’s proposed association will be created, whether it is to indeed be fully recognized by the CEV and indeed whose responsibility it will be to create it. That is to say, whether the CEV will look to establish it, or leave it up to the clubs.
It is also unknown as to whether members will be included on an invitation-only basis or whether it will assume the format of another CEV commission.
The ACPV has not been privy to these discussions and as of yet has received no response from the CEV regarding a meeting and recognizing the ACPV as an independent clubs’ association.
The reasons for this are not yet known.
Reasoning behind the CEV’s decision to attempt to establish such an association remains unclear.
The CEV seeks to establish an association which will ensure dialogue among the clubs and governing bodies around competition arrangements and making Volleyball a more marketable product.
However, these aims have been consistently reiterated on the agenda of the ACPV, yet the ACPV is still to receive contact from the CEV.
The ACPV has been clear in saying that the clubs themselves are eager to participate and have their say in official structures, however, it is a particular matter of note that the CEV only sought to speak to top volleyball teams about forming an association at the Luxembourg meeting.
Any association aimed at establishing a dialogue between the governing body and the clubs in the ACPV’s view should be independent and represent all clubs, not only the top teams.
The ACPV hierarchy is now seeking clarity on the CEV’s position as it seeks to assure its recognition by the European governing body and engage in fruitful discussions to help reform volleyball for the better.
