The women’s team of Maritza PLOVDIV is ready to face CSKA-Demax SOFIA in what is its first home match of the new season in Bulgaria’s National Volleyball League. Olimpiada hall is expected to be completely packed on Saturday afternoon for what has turned into the biggest derby in Bulgarian women’s volleyball in recent years.

Head coach Ivan Petkov can rely on three of Maritza’s experienced players who played for foreign clubs last season – setter Aneliya Mincheva, libero Ivelina Monova and spiker Marina Kovacheva.  Junior international Silviya Andreeva, who suffered a heavy injury about a year ago, is now also back in Petkov’s game plan.

”As many of the players from Maritza’s own hatchery have recently shown some solid growth, we are looking to build our squad based on a symbiosis between young talent and experience”, he said during a press conference before the game with CSKA.  ”There is fierce competition within the team now which is great. We worked hard during the pre-season period, but what is of very high priority for us now is to build a winning spirit into our players’ mentality. Our ambitions are high and our goal is well-known: the national title.”

In fact, the gold medal from the women’s national volleyball championship is the one title that has been evading Maritza so far and the club is desperately looking to add it to its otherwise impressive honors. Out of eight championships last season, the Yellows won six titles – U10, U12, U13, U15, U17 and Women’s Beach Volleyball.  In this phenomenal season Maritza also took silver from the U19 National Championship.

”This was a real grand slam,” the happy club president Iliya Dinkov exclaimed. ”The bar for us has been set high, but for Maritza the only way is always up!
