Lisvel Eve Mejía, a veteran player for the Dominican Republic’s women’s volleyball team, has been removed from the squad for the Paris Olympics. Mejía tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic she used to manage fluid retention. The substance was detected approximately 45 days ago during the Nations League competition.
Mejía, known as “La China,” confessed to her teammates about taking the medication without proper research. She expressed regret, stating that it was a mistake and emphasizing her commitment to fair play. The National Volleyball Team’s press release confirmed her cooperation with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) investigation.
Geraldine González replaced Mejía in the lineup, joining the team in Paris. The Dominican team, known as “Las Reinas del Caribe,” will debut against Italy in their opening match at the Olympics. This marks their fourth Olympic appearance, following participations in Athens 2004, London 2012, and Tokyo 2021.
