On Friday Poland claimed the opening match of the annual Memorial Hubert Jerzy Wagner taking place this year at ORLEN Arena in Plock. The home guys beat the Netherlands 3:1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-15, and 25-18) before they get to play Germany on the second day of the tournament.

“We started out very strong but we did lose composure in the final moments of the opening set” said Poland team captain Marcin Mozdzonek. “After that black-out we fought back and won the game simply because we are the better side. It is still too early to assess our shape. We still have some time to prepare for the start of the European Championship. We take it easy for the time being as this tournament is mainly a good way to celebrate the memory of Hubert Wagner. This is just another step on our way to the EuroVolley 2013”.

Youngster Grzegorz Bociek made one of his first appearances with the national team on Friday.

“I am very happy that he is playing with us. Of course I knew him before he joined the group. We knew he had a strong service but right now he is playing well in all fundamentals. I have a high esteem of Grzegorz and I know that our coach has got full confidence in him” commented libero Pawel Zatorski.

“I am happy with the result” said Poland head coach Andrea Anastasi.

It was an interesting game where we started well and the first set was very close. We lost control of the game but we were able to come back and we played a good game in the end. I know that it is not easy at this stage of our preparations for the European Championship but we eventually achieved what we wanted”.

“We are happy with the outcome of this game, especially with what we showed in the first and second set” said Netherlands mentor Edwin Benne. “We have to recall that this was the first time that we played with our starting setter Nimir Abdel-Aziz who is back from an injury he suffered during the World League. We had very intense preparations in the past few weeks and I am happy that with this tournament we see where we stand right now”.

In another match, Russia beat Germany in straight sets 3:0 (25:15, 25:19, 25:22).
