The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) refused to return to the Russian federation (VFV) and the nation’s authorities at least half of the entry fee for the 2022 Men’s World Championship.
The Secretary General of the VFV, Aleksandr Yaremenko, announced that the FIVB refused their request to return the entry fee for the 2022 Men’s World Championship. The tournament was supposed to be held from August 26 to September 11 in 10 cities in Russia, however, due to the military conflict with Ukraine, it was moved to Poland and Slovenia.
The VFV claimed they had the right to get reimbursed due to the FIVB’s initial position that the event was canceled due to force majeure. The clause in the agreement between the governing bodies of the world and Russian volleyball states that if the tournament is canceled, half of the entry fee is returned to the applicant. Of the $40 million that Russia paid, $20 million was to be returned. Yaremenko explained that after that, the FIVB changed its standpoint, since they incurred additional costs for hosting this World Championship, and turned Russia into the guilty party of this cancellation, not claiming it was force majeure anymore.
