The Dominican Republic continues its victorious streak at the U23 Women’s Pan American Cup by defeating Mexico 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-12, 26-24) in the gold medal match held at Sonora Arena, Hermosillo, Mexico, on Sunday.
This marks the second time in a row that the Dominican Republic has triumphed over Mexico in the event’s finale, thereby securing their sixth U23 Pan American Cup title undefeated with a 5-0 record. Mexico, on the other hand, finished with a 4-1 record, earning their second silver medal in the championship.
Dominican Republic dominated the match with a solid 14 to 5 lead in blocks, 8 to 4 in points from serve, and capitalized on 28 unforced errors by Mexico, while conceding only 14. Mexico, however, outperformed the Dominican Republic in attack points, scoring 51 to 49.
Dominican outside hitter Flormarie topped the score chart for her team with 18 points, composed of 17 kills and one ace. She was closely followed by Madeline Guillen, another outside hitter, who racked up 16 points, and opposite Alondra Tapia who contributed 13 points to the victory.
Despite the loss, Mexico’s outside hitter Sofia Maldonado emerged as the top scorer of the match with 21 points, with Katherine Ramírez adding another 15 to Mexico’s tally.
Dominican setter Ariana Rodríguez secured the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the sixth edition of the Women’s U23 Pan American Cup, adding further glory to her impressive accolades as she was also named the Best Setter of the tournament.
The Dominican Republic didn’t stop there, securing three additional awards. Flormarie Heredia was recognized as the 2nd Best Spiker, while Geraldine González was honored as the 1st Best Blocker, with Florangel Terrero receiving the award for the 2nd Best Blocker.
Mexico’s Sofia Maldonado took home two significant recognitions as the 1st Best Spiker and Top Scorer of the tournament. Her teammate Ximena Cruz was acknowledged as the Best Server.
From the Peruvian team, Pamela Cuya won the Best Libero and Best Defense awards. Another player from Peru, Maria Paula Rodriguez, was awarded as the Best Opposite.
Representing Argentina, Victoria Caballero proved her skill as the Best Receiver of the tournament.
