Miguel Maia, a 46-year-old Portuguese setter, is actually the oldest men’s professional volleyball player in the world – for now! This means that Ivaylo Stefanov fell to No.2.
Maia competes with Sporting Clube de Portugal Lisboa, 5-time champions of Portugal. And although Sporting won their last national title 23 years ago, Maia was involved in it. Actually, he was involved in 3 of the 5 Divisão A1 gold medals (1992, 1993, 1994) of the club. The other 2 came in the mid-’50s.
Now, as a captain, Maia will lead Sporting to the first season in the Portuguese top division in 22 years. This is because the volleyball section, which is under the control of the sports club Sporting CP, was shut down in 1995.
