Obviously, Germany have chosen the right path for the knockout stage at the 2015 CEV European Championship. The players coached by Vital Heynen easily stormed past Belgium in Sofia, Bulgaria 3-0 (25-16, 31-29, 25-17) in playoffs and qualified to the quarterfinals where they will play against the hosts, Bulgaria.

Furious start of Germany in Set 1 determined the rest of it. Grozer was the main figure as he cracked the shell of Belgium with a couple of aces (5-1) and continued with several more consecutive kills 16-10. German setter Kampa didn’t change the winning combination until the end, forcing attacks over Grozer. Belgium simply had no chance to recover 25-16.

Böhme pulled Germany up front at the beginning of Set 2 with two blocks 4-0, but Belgium leveled at 7-all. When they blocked Grozer (5-6), they celebrated it like winning the match! Thanks to incredible dedication in defense and Baetens’ strong spikes, Belgium took over 11-8. Fromm joined Grozer in German attack 11-10. Since that moment, the „Red Dragons“ had a two-point gap several times (15-13, 21-19…) as Deroo scored a few very difficult points. Van den Dries gave Belgians the first set ball with an ace 24-22, but Germany were those who converted their, 31-29. Probably the key moment of the set was at 19-17 for Belgium, when they missed three one-on-one opportunities to score in a single rally!

Fromm was on a high level at start of Set 3, giving Germans 10-7. Good blocking anticipation brough Germany to 16-10 at the second TTO. Belgian coach Baeyens tried to change the course of the match with several substitutions (Coolman, Rousseaux, D’Hulst…) but it was in vain 25-17.

Christian Fromm was German top scorer with 11 points. Sam Deroo had 14 in Belgium.
