We decided to check the information and Dick Kooy gave us the same answer – “I won’t play for the Dutch national team anymore”.

This is a huge blow for “Oranje”. We asked Kooy to explain why he decided to stop playing in the national team of his country.

“I’ve requested the Italian citizenship since I’ve been living in Italy in Milan for a few years. I would like to spend more time with my family in Italy during the summer as well. I will keep both Dutch and Italian citizenship but I’m allowed to have only one sports nationality. So, for now, I will stop my national team career, I don’t know what will happen in the future. Also, I will request the Italian sports nationality so I won’t be allowed to play for the Netherlands anymore and I’m sorry about that,” Kooy said.

We wanted to make some things clear. Does that mean that you will get permission to play for Italy in the future?

“In general, it is good for my life to have Italian sports nationality. One day I will come back to play in Italy and If I get Italian sports nationality, I will be able to play as the Italian player in Serie A1. At the moment, I am not thinking about national teams. Of course, it would be nice thing, but I will have to wait for two years anyway,” Kooy stated for WorldofVolley.

I’ve lost all of my respect to this guy. Dutches can be proud of getting rid of him.
