What has happened in the meantime? Head coach Vladimir Alekno stated that Russian volleyball stopped developing for some reason, while now everyone in the country, including the local media, are trying to figure out what was that reason.
The latest theory is that the main problem in Russian volleyball is that there might be too many foreign players in domestic clubs. There is an ongoing debate in which some people are suggesting that the Russian Superleague should reduce the limit of foreign players per club.
“Yes, we can try that. We can at least put a test version and see what will happen” said Zenit Kazan player Maxim Mikhailov for R-Sport. “We have a relatively small number of foreign players in our volleyball league. Much less than in football or basketball for example. The problem is that the foreigners, who are playing in the Russian Championship, are usually receivers or opposites and those are the positions we are short of in the national team,” said Mikhailov.
