A long lasting knee injury has been causing major problems for the 34-year-old receiver/outside hitter so, he had to say farewell to volleyball after 161 caps and 16 years of playing at the highest level.

Horstink played his last game in late November 2014 after joining Italian team Revivre Milano when he suffered knee injury and was operated in January 2015.

Then, he put a new goal in front of him. During rehabilitation period, Horstink decided to work on a return to the Dutch National Team, to whom he said goodbye in 2012. But, a few weeks before the European Championships he underwent surgery again delaying his comeback to ‘Oranje’.

Horstink was part of the last Dutch NT that took place at the Olympic Games, in 2004. Although he made his debut for the national team at the age of 17, in 1999, he collected only 161 international caps, partly because of injuries and decision to quit playing for ‘Oranje’ in 2012.
