In short lines, Angelo Vercesi is the Brazilian ex-volleyball player; now the head coach of Croatian Women’s National Team and Azeryol Baku.
WorldofVolley made an exclusive interview with him during his stay in Belgrade.
Croatia has played three friendlies against Serbia and we asked him if he is satisfied?
“I must say yes, although we lost all three games. I must thanks to the Serbian Volleyball Federation who invited us to play against one of the best teams in the World. In Belgrade we were close to achieve at least one victory of 3-2 but we missed some things. Next week we are waiting Serbia in Slovenia to play one more game” said Vercesi.
It seems that Croatia has a good team?
“When you changed the coach you also changed the way of play and system of work. I like to play with aggressive block and with many combinations in attack, and that is not easy for the setters. We played on the high level against Serbia and I am happy that my players tried to do best. I think that they learned how to fight, which is important for our team. But they are not still aggressive as they need to. We are going step by step. “
Are they afraid of the World Championship?
“My opinion is that they are not afraid. Before, they had considered National Team as kind of obligation. They were like – I need to go, I need to be there… Now, the players who are here, want to be here. Still we need to learn how to become winners. I am not here to be 5th or 8th; I am here because I want to win the gold medal. I am not thinking how to defeat Argentina, I am thinking how to be better than Italy. We don’t have enough time to change everything but I believe in something big. We have good energy out of court so we need to put it also on the court”.
You became famous for unusual support of your team. Can we also expect that in Italy?
“Yes of course. I need to support my players. Look, if I can say one word – it’s passion. Volleyball is for me passion; I don’t work for money. This is natural. You know, when I saw the first video from Azerbaijan which one player showed me, I was really ashamed. But, after few days when I saw all positive comments from all over the world I continued with this. I am thankful to fans who recognize when you are doing something with passion“
At the World Championship in Italy we will see four Brazilian coaches; it seems that all of you have the same passion?
“In Brazil, volleyball is the second sport and we have so many players, coaches, clubs but Italy still dominates in volleyball. When I wanted to make my name in volleyball I went to Italy. But, Ze Roberto was our door to the World. We are all thankful to him. You know, we are still tryaing to do something out of our country.“
