At the very end of the past century, the gold medal at World Championships was reserved for Italy. Azzurri were the best in the World three times in a row (1990 in Brazil, 1994 in Greece and 1998 in Japan), but then everything went wrong…
Italians have not won a single medal since that last gold in 1998!!!
In Argentina 2002 they were 5th, four years after in Japan they were 5th as well, while 2010, when they were hosts of the World Championship, Azzurri won just 4th place…
And finally, when fans were hoping that 16 year-long curse will finally be broken in Poland, a new disappointment arrived. Italy failed to qualify among the top 6 teams at the Championship 2014…
They will have to wait for the next tournament. When it begins, they will be exactly 20 years without the World medal.
