The volleyball icon in Brazil, José Roberto Guimarães ’Zé Roberto’, has a chance to coach overseas again after a decade.
Zé Roberto might have another chance to work outside of Brazil on a club level. He was engaged overseas by two clubs thus far. First, in Volley Pesaro between 2006 and 2009, during which he became the national champion and Super Cup winner twice apiece, as well as the national cup and CEV Cup winner once each. Apart from a three-year adventure in Italy, an Olympic champion as head coach of the Brazil Women’s National Team in 2008 and 2012 coached Turkey’s Fenerbahçe Opet between 2010 and 2012. During those two seasons at the helm of the ’Yellow Angels’, the 68-year-old expert commanded the club to titles in the CEV Champions League, FIVB Club World Championship, Turkish Championship, and Turkish Super Cup—once each.
According to Gian Luca Pasini, Zé Roberto, currently at the helm of ’Seleção’ (since 2003) and Barueri Volleyball Club (since 2016), got proposals from two European sides: Italy’s Vero Volley Milano and Turkey’s Türk Hava Yolları (THY). Also, Zé Roberto is seen as the supervisor of the new volleyball project in his home country, Clube Brasil, which aims to gather the most talented players across Brazil. He’s reportedly the closest to deciding to accept the last of these three offers.
