Brazil, who was the Olympic champion in 2008 and 2012, lost the tie-break thriller against China. That last point, when they officially stayed without a chance of winning a medal in Rio, will stay recorded as one of the saddest moments in Brazilian volleyball history.
Everyone in the gym cried, including the young grandson of head coach Roberto Guimaraes.

Volleyball is the second sport in Brazil (for many, it’s the first..). These girls that play in Brazil NT are very beloved by their compatriots, popular and followed by a legion of passionate fans in their social networks.
For some players, the Rio 2016 has been a farewell, the end of a long glorious cycle, that includes: 3 consecutive podiums in the World Championship (two finals in 2006 and 2010 besides a bronze medal in 2014) and 2 golden olympic medal (Beijing 2008 and London 2012), in addition to many World Grand Prix titles.
Actually the Brazil’s defeat has been the most painful sporting moment in all Rio 2016 for the brazilians!
I’m brazilian. And I cried. My family also wept. As my friends who also watched the match on TV.
Despite all this, the best has been to see that these girls were very applauded and received a lot of support and affection of the fans.
This team could have gone further in the competition? – Sure.
This team could have won the tournament and so be three-time Olympic champions (like Cuba NT in 90’s) ? – Maybe.
But, one thing is right: these girls are legendary and nothing will erase their legacy and the love that volleyball fans have for them.
Thank you, girls!
If anyone can recall, during that match the crowd was booing China the whole match. Once the match was over, while Brazil was lining up at the net to shake hands, China wanted none it. I can’t recall a volleyball match where such a behavior occurred.
Do I feel bad for the individual Brazilian girls, of course. Do I feel bad for Brazilian volleyball, after the home crowd behavior, no.
The saddest thing for me, looking at it from Brazil’s point of view. Wouldn’t be losing, but losing in front of a home crowd without a lack of respect. Karma I guess.
Brazilians booing has been noneffective for the China team at all during the whole quarterfinal since China have went through it when they played their first match vs the Netherlands. On the contrary it motivated China to be stronger. And such host booing to their opponent in a sport match just brings more humiliations and sadness when the host team lose the match, which just had been seen as the match point was taken by China. The Brazil team even did not show up (again) in the conference room after the match.
