The 2020 volleyball calendar outlines events under the FIVB for the next Olympic cycle, between 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Earlier this year, the BOA established a working group in order to optimize the calendar, which was a result of serious complaints expressed by the world volleyball stars. The planned calendar will prioritize the welfare of the athletes and is based on data analysis of key volleyball events. The working group also took into account recommendations and feedback from clubs, national and continental federations, and the FIVB Athletes’ Commission.
Bottom line: The working group’s proposal to reduce the number of events and create a motto “Less is More” has been accepted. The 2020 calendar brings out several official events in the next 4 years: both annual Volleyball Nations League, both continental championships in 2021 and 2023 (and their qualification tournaments), both 2022 World Championships, and 2024 Paris Olympic Games. It also includes the clubs’ annual season: national, continental and international competitions. The precise schedule of the new 2021-2024 competition calendar will be published in the first quarter of 2020.
“Our goal was to streamline the calendar in the best interests of the athletes. Their health and well-being is our number one priority and we want to allow enough recovery time so that they can perform at their best,” the FIVB President Ary S Graça Fᵒ said.
Additionally, the BOA approved updates to the qualification process for some of FIVB’s major events (2022 World Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics), which will incorporate the revolutionary new senior World Ranking system with a goal to ensure equal opportunities for all national teams.
