Italy outplayed Russia in tie-break 25-21, 27-29, 24-26, 26-24 and 15-10 and in that way scored the first two points in Group 1.

A brilliant Paola Egonu scored amazing 39 points for the Italian team; 31 from attack, 5 from service and 3 from the block. On the Russian side, Irina Voronkova scored 25 points.

For the first time in the history of this competition, Russia lost all three opening games of Grand Prix, which says that they have a big problem with the new generation.

Coach of Italy Davide Mazzanti after the match said: “Today’s match is very important, especially after losing two matches. Things were not good for us at the beginning, but we are mentally strong and finally won the match. I’m quite happy to win.
