Medical commission of the FIVB met in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss anti-doping procedures, sports medicine, the promotion of a healthy lifestyle through volleyball and transgender athlete participation in the sport. On the meeting, the commission maintained the guidelines established by the IOC when it comes to the participation of transgender athletes.

The FIVB Medical commission emphasized on the issue of allowing transgender athletes to compete, for which they said it is sensitive, that it respects individual choice of a person but also wants to ensure a fair and equitable system of competition for all athletes.

As for national club competitions, it was left to each national federation to set rules for the participation of transgender athletes.

The most famous volleyball case of allowing the transgender player to compete is certainly the case of Tifanny Abreu. After undergoing a sex change, she first took part in an Italian women’s Division 2 last season while now, she is a member of the Brazilian women’s side Vôlei Bauru.

Recall what she said about the fact that some of the former and active volleyball players in Brazil are against her competing in the female competition in an exclusive interview to our website.
