WCHY M: Decimated Belgium scores impressive comeback

Belgium recovered from losing its regular setter and rallied back from a 0-2 set deficit to defeat hosts Mexico in a Pool A match of Day Three at the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship on Saturday night. Lowie Stuer, Gilles Vandecaveye, Arno Van de Velde, Robbe Vandeweyer, Ivan Molano and Enrique Ugalde were the top scorers.

Both teams played erratic at different moments of the long match. Mexico made gave away 37 points via errors and Belgium committed 34. The home team scored with 17 blocks to 11 by the winners.

Lowie Stuer was one of four players of Belgium squad who had double digits in the scoring charts with 18 points. Gilles Vandecaveye added 16 while Arno Van de Velde and Robbe Vandeweyer each contributed 12. Mexico’s Ivan Molano and Enrique Ugalde finished with 17 and 15 points.

Florian Malisse came into action as regular in the third set after the regular setter and captain Sander Depovere injured an ankle and was forced to leave the match.

It was the second victory for Belgium without losses totaling five points while Mexico dropped to 0-3 but collected its first point.
