Twelve teams have been divided into three pools with four teams.
Pool A: Canada, Peru, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic
Pool B: USA, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba, Puerto Rico
Pool C: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia
The top two ranked teams at the end of the preliminary round will advance directly to the semifinals with the pool winner with the lowest ranking will compete in the quarterfinals with the top second and third place teams.
The top five ranked teams at the end of the tournament will be granted of tickets to the Pan American Games to be held next year in Lima, Peru.
