The world’s smartest setters in volleyball

by WoV

One of the top positions on the volleyball court is that of the setter. When it comes to attack or defense, the setter is one of the most crucial players, though most of their job is recognizable when attacking. Good communication makes great setters and they mostly use their body language to communicate with the hitters, when attacking.

In games planned on a 6-1 setting, the setter is an important member of the team he or she plays for because of the decision-making aspect. Here the setter plays all the way around, taking up defensive duties when the team needs to, offering blocks on the right side when in the front row but also taking up attacking roles.

A good setter is a strategic player, with varying responsibilities and thus a major cog in the success of a volleyball team; he or she is the main contributor to the offense and with their delicate touches they can completely change the course of the game. So who are some of the smartest setters in the world of volleyball at the moment? Here we sample a few:

Giannelli Simone: Italian national Simone has been described as one of the most aggressive setters in the game. He remains one of the key reasons his team Sir Safety Perugia would time and again enjoy favorable previews and odds on Wincomparator. Born in 1996, Simone’s height gives him an advantage over most opponents and is of great value to his team as well as the national team. In 2015, he won the bronze medal at the European Championship and a silver medal at the World Cup the same year.

Bruno Mossa: The Brazilian is also plying his trade in the Italian league, the Superlega, which has been billed as one of the best in the world. Mossa has won nine gold medals in various major competitions, including the 2016 Olympic Games. He was the star player at the 2019 World Cup. In his club career, in Italy and Brazil, Mossa has managed 14 club championships

Marte Frica: Some of the world’s best setters are ladies, and a good number come with accomplished achievements. Dominican national Marte Frica is a perfect example. Though she hasn’t won a lot of major accolades in the world, her performances can’t escape a lot of eyes. She was at the 2012 Olympic games as her team finished fifth. The bronze at the 2015 Pan American games remains a top accolade for her in addition to the 2009 World Championship with the Dominican Junior team.

Matias Sanchez: Argentinian Matias Sanchez is another top setter in the world. Born in 1996, the highest award for Sanchez so far is a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games. He has a great vision which aids in his good setting and offers a major advantage to his team’s hitters and a nightmare to the opponents. Sanchez has won at least seven individual awards as the best setter across international competitions between 2013 and 2019.
