PUR W: Ponce and Caguas one win away from the finals

Ponce and Caguas are on the brink of the final series of the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League following their third consecutive victories over Mayaguez and Carolina, respectively. The third match of the best-of-seven “Semifinals A” was a fiery five-set battle won by Ponce 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12 on Wednesday.

Ponce has not visited a league’s final series since 1991, when they won their third national title.

Nicole Fawcett topped Ponce with 29 points followed by Airial Salvo and Legna Hernandez who contributed 19 points apiece. Rookie of the Year Janeliss Torres added 11 points, including five blocks.

Diane Copenhagen and Shonda Cole finished with 25 and 24 points, respectively, in the loss.

In the third match of the “Semifinals B”, Caguas beat Carolina 25-12, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18 on Thursday.
