WCC M: Italy’s Trentino Diatec achieve the four-peat

Trentino Diatec wonthe Men’s FIVB Club Word Championship by defeating Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil at the Aspire Zone Hall of Doha. Matey Kaziyski, Jan Stokr and Osmany Juantorena were the best for Diatec. Wallace De Souza, Douglas Cordeiro, Marcos Leal and Filipe Ferraz for Sada Cruzeiro.

The fourth gem of Trentino added up to four other crowns won by Italian clubs in the editions from 1989-1992. Only clubs from that country have occupied the top of the podium in the history of the event.

Matey Kaziyski and Jan Stokr shared the honors as top scorers of Trentino Diatec each with 17 points while Osmany Juantorena contributed 14 points.

Wallace De Souza led Sada Cruzeiro with 12 points while Douglas Cordeiro, Marcos Leal and Filipe Ferraz each finished with 8 points.

Trentino held a huge 11-3 advantage in the blocking category and also bested their opponents 4-1 in the aces department.

Juantorena and Stokr each landed two spikes to give Trentino Diatec an 8-6 lead in the first set. The Italian club widened the distance to 10-6 following the spike of Juantorena. Tretino increased the gap to 15-10 when Tzourits blocked De Souza and Stokr did also against Ferraz. The score was 16-10 at the second pause. Juantorena blocked Ferraz for 18-11 and Sada Cruzeiro called a time-out. Sada Cruzeiro took advantage of a streak of opponent’s errors to cut the gap but Tzourits and Stokr provided breath with two big spikes. Trentino took the set 25-18.

Trentino Diatec continued with their strong show by leading 8-5 and 16-8 at the two technical time outs of the second set. Juantorena did not show any signs of slowing down and Birarelli was a defensive force at the net. Kaziyski was another big contributor to the impressive offensive displayed by Trentino. Juantorena injured his back trying to keep a ball in play as he jumped into the tables at the back end and was receiving treatment near the bench. At 20-13, Marcos Leal served long for Sada Cruzeiro and Juantorena came back into action. Kaziyski scored from the back court for 23-13. He then served an ace for 24-13. De Souza landed a couple of shots from the right side and Stokr closed the set for Trentino 25-15.

Juantorena broke an equalized score at 7-all with a powerful spike off the opponent’s block for an 8-7 slight advantage. Stokr increased the margin to 9-7. The score was tied at 15-all but Juantorena hit a big smash for the difference at the second pause. Marcos Leal tied the score again but Kaziyski landed a subtle touch. Ferraz hit a formidable spike from the back court and De Souza gave Sada Cruzeiro the lead 18-17. Borges served long for 18-18 but Ferraz stepped in for the Brazilians. Juantorena scored two in a row for a 20-19 advantage of Trentino. Cordeiro responded for Sada Cruzeiro. It was Juantorena again scoring for the Italian team. Cordeiro scored twice to give the Brazilian the lead 22-21. Stokr blocked Cordeiro to even up things at 22-all. Borges provided the margin to the South American side but Cordeiro netted his serve. At 23-all, Marcos Leal scored from the center but De Souza failed with the serve for the level at 24-24. Stokr crashed his serve but then landed his spike. Marcos Leal blocked Juantorena for 26-25 but just missed his serve. At 27-27, Juantorena hammered a cannon-shot and Sada Cruzeiro called for time-out. Ferraz failed with his attack and Trentino were champions again.
