Even though Poland’s national team did not medal at London 2012, still this was a memorable season for the group mentored by Andrea Anastasi and anchored by Kurek that claimed the FIVB World League for the first time in history this past July in Sofia. The 10 sportspeople finally retained for this prestigious award will be announced during a special gala scheduled for January 5, 2013, at Teatr Polski in Warsaw. The gala will be broadcast by TVP1 and TVP Sport.
Kurek was shortlisted by the organizers with the following motivation: “In July 2012 Kurek lead the guys in white and red jerseys to their first World League triumph in history. He scored 60 points all alone in the four matches played during the finals in Sofia and delivered a great performance as Poland played Team USA in the gold medal match. The Olympic champions from Beijing 2008 could simply not stand his serves and attacks and the 24-year old Kurek was eventually awarded as MVP of the finals”.
The poll is sponsored by PGE – Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A. -, strategic sponsor PK ORLEN S.A. and official partner LOTTO, with the additional support of Hilton Hotel and Coca Cola.
The 20 nominees are: Sylwia Bogacka (shooting); Bartlomiej Bonk (weightlifting); Magdalena Fularczyk and Julia Michalska (rowing); Marci Gortat (basketball); Damian Janikowski (wrestling); Sebastian Kawa (gliding); Radoslaw Kawecki (swimming); Justyna Kowalczyk (cross-country skiing); Bartosz Kurek (volleyball); Robert Lewandowski (soccer); Tomasz Majewski (athletics); Przemyslaw Miarczynski (sailing); Karolina Naja and Beata Mikolajczyk (canoeing); Zofia Noceti-Klepacka (sailing); Katarzyna Pawlowska (cycling); Agnieszka Radwanska (tennis); Anita Wlodarczyk (athletics); Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (boxing); Adrian Zielinski (weightlifting).
